On Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the Philippines, destroying the country, taking the lives of thousands of people, and affecting millions. The storm has proved to be one of the strongest ever recorded and said to be the most devastating natural catastrophe the country has seen.
In an attempt to provide much-needed assistance to those affected, PokerStars has teamed up with global relief charity CARE International to launch an emergency appeal. PokerStars players can make donations to the CARE International relief effort via the client, and PokerStars plans to match the total amount raised. The effort has been launched through PokerStars' corporate giving program Helping Hands.
There are a few ways one can contribute. First, one may make his or her donation via a dummy tournament. In the PokerStars client lobby, special dummy events have been set up under the 'Tourney' > 'All' tabs. These are not real tournaments, so please do not get confused. The events are simply ways for PokerStars to collect donations. Entering these dummy tournaments does not result in any poker being played. You can also find them by typing 'Typhoon Haiyan Relief' into the tournament filter.
According to the landing page for the relief fund, these dummy tournaments are offered with several buy-in options, and that buy-in will be directly donated into the fund, then matched by PokerStars.
A second way one can donate is through player transfer. An account named 'Typhoon Fund' has been set up to collect these transfers with the associated country of Isle of Man.
Finally, anyone may directly donate to CARE International. The organization has set up a special page for the PokerStars/Helping Hands Philippines Typhoon Appeal where all information can be found.
